Debate on the topic ‘Trends in Economic Development of Haryana

A debate on the topic ‘Trends in Economic Development of Haryana’ was organized in B.Com II Sem under the guidance of Dr. Ritu Kang Walia, Assistant Professor of Economics. For this purpose students were divided into two teams i.e. Boys & Girls. Boys, team spoke in favour and girls’s team gave their arguments against.
Highlighting the economic development in Haryana, Boys make a case that since inception of Haryana, Net State Domestic Product has increased manifold and Per Capita Income has increased 407 times. Haryana is at third place among all Indian States for high per capita income. Boys justified the development in general and education development of Haryana particular by stating that Literacy rate in Haryana (75.6 per cent) is higher than India (74.04 per cent). Over the period of time, growth is witnessed in all the sectors (Agriculture, Industry and services) of Haryana economy. Students made an argument that Haryana is the first state that has linked all villages with roads, provided drinking water and electricity. Many IT units and Business Process Outsourcing units have developed in Gurugram, Panipat and Faridabad.
Highlighting the drawbacks of Economic development in Haryana, Team of Girls argued that although Literacy rate is high in Haryana but district wise and male-female disparity in literacy rate exists. They pointed out the challenge of lowest sex ratio in Haryana. In their presentation, they highlighted that in Haryana, fifty per cent population is dependent on agriculture sector while it contributes approx. 17 per cent in State Income which clearly justifies the disguised unemployment in Haryana agriculture.
In this competition Samiksha, Bhawna, Jyoti, Yashika, Saloni, Arpana, Diya, Renuka, Malak, Harsh Gulshan, Aashish, Rahul, Deepak, Prince and Sunil contributed a lot with other students. Dr. Virander Goyal, Head, Department of Economics congratulated Dr. Ritu for making learning more student centric and providing students a chance to share their know-how about Haryana Economy.
