About

One of the largest and oldest Departments of the College, the Department of English has the same year of inception as the College, that is, 1954. Prof. S.C. Singhal, an alumnus of Panjab University, was the founder faculty and Head of the dept. Since English is one of the compulsory subjects, it has a distinct place in humanities. The Department continued to cater to the core needs of the area for thirty years through Undergraduate teaching -learning until 1983-84 when PG classes were introduced. Its outstanding contributions to the mission of the institution through its well laid precedence of intellectual resilience and academic excellence continues unfettered. Widely recognized as one of the leading centres for the study of English Language and Literature at UG and PG level, it has long been recognized for its achievements in creative writings and research. Dr. O.P. Singla as the first doctorate of the dept. ushered in a research-centric phase. Prof. Amrit Lal Madan and Prof. Vijay Kumar Singhal, creative writers of national eminence in different genres of Hindi literature, inculcated genuine spirit of interdisciplinarity and literariness among their peers and students. Maintaining astrong focus on the basic learning needs of students, the Dept. also encouragesground-breaking researchand interdisciplinary approaches to literary studies. The Department of English has to its credit the organization of First ever International Conference by the College in 2012 and also International Award to the MRP supervised by Dr. Geeta Goyal. Several star alumni of the dept are now serving the institution as faculty. Undergraduate and Postgraduate students of the Department have often secured positions at University level.

Student Association

English Literary Society (ELS) is a society of subject-specific enthusiasts with immense scope for diverse interests. The society organizes literary activities in the College campus throughout the year. The main focus of ELS is to promote an in-depth understanding of language and literature that lies beyond the ken of the syllabus. ELS encourages the students to display their extra-curricular skills leading to their healthy and holistic development. Students plan and organize   competitions like poster-making, essay-writing, book-reviews, quizzes, seminars, screening of films etc. ELS also collaborates with other departments for extra and co-curricular activities related to language, literature,  culture, current affairs and  major occasions/days of national or international importance.
