Department of Sanskrit

About Us

The Department of Sanskrit is one of the oldest departments of the college, with its origins dating back to 1960. It began under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Bhagwandas Nirmohi, a renowned scholar and poet of national repute. Dr. Nirmohi was actively involved in various social, cultural, and literary organizations. He was a founding member of the Sahitya Sabha, a prominent literary organization in the state, which is closely associated with the College through its weekly and annual functions.

Dr. R.R. Malik, an alumnus of the College and later a faculty member, served the department until March 2003 when he assumed the role of Principal at GMN (PG) College, Ambala Cantt. Since its inception, the department has consistently offered Sanskrit as both an elective and a compulsory subject. The number of students opting for Sanskrit remains high, with approximately 350 students enrolled, making it one of the most popular departments in the state. Currently, the department is staffed by two highly qualified regular faculty members with notable achievements in research and literary activities.

The department goes beyond the traditional lecture-based method of teaching, incorporating learner-centric approaches and a participatory style. Activities such as extension lectures, inter-college Sanskrit speeches, Shlokocharan, Sarva Bhasha Kavitocharan competitions, quiz contests, PPT presentations, poster making, and essay writing competitions provide students with holistic learning experiences. The Guru-Shishya Parampara, a significant aspect of Indian culture, is integral to the department’s tradition, emphasizing the strong teacher-student relationship. Faculty members also offer academic, career, and spiritual counseling, ensuring the overall development of students.

The Sanskrit Parishad, the subject society of the department, organizes events that encourage students from various disciplines to engage in Sanskrit-related activities. This approach ensures that Sanskrit transcends the boundaries of Arts and Sciences and becomes an inclusive subject of study.
