Department of Mathematics

About Us

The Department of Mathematics, established in 1957, is one of the oldest and most esteemed departments in the state. The department is proud of its exceptional legacy of educating successive generations of students from Haryana and Punjab. Prof. Panna Lal, a Postgraduate in Mathematics from Punjab University, Chandigarh, was the first to join the department in 1957. He, along with other key faculty members such as Prof. G.L. Gupta (1970) and Dr. S.S. Mehla (1989), played a pivotal role in inspiring students to pursue and build careers in mathematics.

Mathematics was taught exclusively at the undergraduate level in Arts, Sciences, and Commerce until 2013 when the M.Sc. Mathematics program was introduced. Today, Mathematics is offered as an optional and compulsory subject in B.A., B.Com., B.B.A., B.C.A., and all B.Sc. courses. The department continuously updates its curriculum in line with the affiliating university, ensuring a balance between theory and practical learning.

To support this, the department boasts two fully equipped computer labs with 45 computers and high-speed internet. Currently, the department is home to 15 faculty members, including 4 regular and 12 self-financed faculty on an ad-hoc basis. The Subject Society plays a vital role in organizing student-centric activities such as quizzes, PPT presentations, poster-making, rangoli competitions, and more. The department also places a strong emphasis on research and modern teaching methods to cater to the growing demands of students.
