About
The Department of Sanskrit is one of the oldest departments of the college with its origins as early as 1960. It started functioning under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Bhagwandas Nirmohi, a scholar and poet of national fame. Late Dr. Nirmohi played an active role in social, cultural and literary organizations. He was one of the founders of Sahitya Sabha , one of the premiere literary organizations of the state identified with the College as the center of its weekly and annual functions. Dr. R.R. Malik, an alumnus of the College and eventually a faculty, served the dept. till March,2003 the year he joined as Principal, GMN (PG) College, Ambala Cantt. From the very beginning, the students are offered Sanskrit subject as elective as well as a compulsory subject. The number of students opting for the subject is steadily around 350, probably the highest number among the colleges in the state. At present Sanskrit dept has two regular faculty with proven record in research and literary activism.
Apart from the traditional lecture method, faculty of the dept. practice of learner-centric teaching methods and participatory approach. This is reflected in activities and events such as Extension lectures, Inter-College Sanksrit Bhashan, Shlokocharan, and Sarva Bhasha Kavitocharan Pratiyogita, Quiz contests, PPT, Poster making, Essay writing competition and exhibition. The Guru Shishya Parampara, the main strength of Indian culture is the hallmark of the department legacy and teacher-taught relationship in the subject. The faculty actively provide academic, career and spiritual counselling to students. The popularity of Sanskrit as a subject among students in the College often transcends boundaries of Arts and Sciences. Sanskrit Parishad, the subject society of the dept. organizes functions and events involving students of different interests and orientations.

Sanskrit Parishad is constituted among the students. It has office four bearers, President. Vice President, Treasurer. The objective of the Parishad is to promote Sanskrit language and literature. The Society also endeavors to provide leadership and confidence building opportunities to the students. Faculty of the dept. contribute as mentors.
